SERVICE-LEARNING THROUGH BLOOD DONATION

Context:  In order to encourage the students to participate in Community – based learning our college focused on civil and societal issues and therefore made the students to participate in Blood Donation Camps. This will help the students to make a link between what they have learnt in the classroom and how to actually put them in practice. This practice brings a linkage between knowledge and action and between the resources of the institution and the Community development.

Objectives: To motivate the students to link themselves between the College learning and how to give Societal Service. This can be done through Blood Donation Camp as the students will realise the importance of donating blood for the people who need it during risky situations of health.

Practice: DRM Science College has been organizing Blood Donation Camps for 15 years. Earlier, it was done in collaboration with the Blood Bank of J.J.M. Medical College, Davanagere. For the last 5 years, it is being organized in collaboration with Red-Cross Society and Blood Bank of S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences, Davanagere.

            Préparations to Organise Blood-Donation Camp was made after making discussions with Co-ordinations of S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences, Davanagere and Arrangements to check HB counts and other health conditions before taking blood from the donors was made as a necessary Precaution.

The impact: The Blood donation camp made a great impact on the students as well as teachers. It has developed a sense of responsibility among the students towards society and also helped to develop their personality. It has also created a sense of managerial ability among the students for organizing such type of events in the College.

BEST PRACTICE 2

PRATHIBHA – PURASKARA

Context:  To link the academic excellence with recognition and appreciation, the past with present, an unique program of our college which is in practice is Prathibha-Puraskara. This program brings permanent bondage between the retired teachers, alumni members, public  and present teachers who are donors and students who are honored in the form of Cash prizes for their achievement and excellence in Academics.

Objectives: To encourage and motivate the students to excel in academics. This is done by identifying the toppers of degree examination and by giving them Cash Prizes. This in turn inspires the other students to become toppers in future. The donors remain connected with the college activities and their contribution is remembered forever. This further encourages new donors to come forward.

Practice: Every year meritorious students are honored in a unique way by giving cash prizes through Prathibha Puruskara since 1999. A committee of Prithibha- Prathistana has been formed in the College to run the process of Prathibha- Puraskara. Principal is the chairman of Prathibha- Prathistana.

                    Some of the members of governing body of Bapuji Educational Association ®, Teaching staff, Non-teaching staff, retired professors and alumni of the college are the donors for prathibha- puraskara. The donation given by the donors is kept in Bapuji Co-operative Bank as fixed deposit. Every year the interest accruded from this deposit has been given to the toppers of degree examination in the form of cash prize. The toppers are selected class wise (I, II, &III BSc), Combination wise (PCM, CBZ, PMCs) and Subject wise according to the choice of the donors.

                      Prathibha- Puraskara award was started in the year 1999 with a deposit of Rs.2000.  In the academic year 2015-16, deposit  amount has increased to 3 lakhs and in the year 2016-17, the deposit has been increased to Rs.500000. Generally Prathibha -Purashkar award Ceremony is Conducted during Academic & Cultural Inauguration of the College every year. Donors are invited to this function and awards are given to the students by donors.

 The Impact : This practice has attained immense success from years. Prathibha Prathistana is getting more & more donors every year. The students who have been honored in the first year take it as a challenge to get the award in the subsequent years. On the other hand, many other students aim for it and have succeeded. Many a times, the donors after attending the Prathibha-Puraskara award function have extended their hand further and have contributed to give more awards. This year one of the alumni who had already donated announced rupees one lakh for Prathistana on the day of award function

                 This program has connected the retired staff of our college with the present staff. New staff members have got inspiration and have contributed to Prathibha -Prathishtana. Students who have been honored are committed to excel in their academics.

BEST PRACTICE 3

TITLE: SCIENTIFIC PRACTICE OF DOCUMENTATION

Objectives: To know the plant diversity, distribution and research

Context: Plants specimen collected in forest, preserved, maintained for research work.

Practice: Since 20 years.

Evidence of success: More than 15000 herbaria are preserved. Problems encountered: Difficult problems faced in forest.

BEST PRACTICE 4

TITLE: SCIENTIFIC TEMPERAMENT IN STUDENTS.

Objectives: Inculcating Scientific Temperament in school students.

Context: Visit of school and PU College students to study experiments.

Practice: For the past 15 years this practice is going on.

Evidence of Success: Students develop scientific temperament. Problems Encountered: Students divided into different batches.
